The city of Bat-dam-bong gets its name from the legend of Ta DumBong. The current name Battambang is the French translation of the above, which came into practice during French’s colonisation of Cambodia.
The Ta Dumbong Kro Aung Statue (or Black man Statue ) was born from a legend that dates back to the 11th century.
Ta Dumbong was a humble herder who slayed a king with a black stick, then became king. The stick was lost and the name of Battambang came from the meaning ‘lost stick’.
Today the locals come here to pray and offer gifts, flowers and food to this statue. He has the power to hear your prayers.Â
